PostSubject: Martial Arts Training   Thu Dec 10, 2009 9:08 pm

For those of you who don't know, I am a brown belt in TKD, and have over 12 years experience in both Budo Taijutsu and Muay Thai.

What I've been thinking of doing is having a series of weekly classes for local RLSH (in the Pac NW) in an effort to help train folks who ordinarily have little experience in how to defend one's self in hand-to-hand combat.

What I need from those of you in the area is support and ideas as to when such classes/seminars should be held.

Any thoughts?

Do we have a location yet? Or do we wanna try at one of those parks downtown. I know of a few places that would provide us the space we need.

Parks would be cool. that way I can hop on the max and park the car... or I'll see what Antiman's situation is.

What style of TKD?

Some styles of TKD do not have a brown belt; They just add stripes to the tips of other colored belts to show progress.. I guess a brown belt in your style would be equal to one of the red belts in mine.

Either way, this sounds useful to the people who are not already training.

There are a number of options, starting with just doing it in a public park. Alternatives would include community centers or a local YMCA. One option you might overlook (but that might yield good results) would be to find a progressive church with a gym / activities room and see if they'd let you use it once a week or something.

Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot, Simon. I really appreciate the input. So first, I'll find venue, and then I can work on a curriculum of sorts

So, here is a basic run-down,

I've not yet contacted venues, though I will. In the meantime, here are the equipment you'd need:

One boxing head protector
Boxing gloves
Mouth guard
Cup (yes, even for any women...vag-kicks hurt more)
Martial arts chest and shin guards.

The basic curriculum will run down something like this:

1. Boxing Basics- This covers the basic punches, footwork, and movement needed to begin boxing.
2. Boxing Advanced- In this, we cover more defensive postures, combinations, and actual in-ring competition
3. Kick Boxing Basics- Basic strikes involved using the legs in Muay Thai
4. Kick Boxing Advanced- More combination and endurance work, with emphasis on sparring
5. Grappling Basics- Where we cover basic grappling holds and counters for them

That's all I have so far. If we had somebody in the area with more MMA experience, we could cover some of that as well.

But so far, what do you all think?
