No big deal, same old walk, peaceful and quiet. Nice vistas, no problems. Met up with 8 at the base after I'd checked the eastern trail then went on to the rock. Only activity was a local kid on a quad going to the reservoir. I just couldn't resist posting cause I'm a geek.

I must admit that I haven't made the time for patrols lately. I have been much too busy dealing with my living situation as well as late night shifts at work. I have, however, been adding to my equipment in the meantime. I have equipped myself with a new sword. ^_^

More on patrolling-

So, we went on two patrols today... the first was the winter anti-poacher thing, around the back of the mountain and to the scenic point designated gamma. The second wa to the area we bbq at during the summer with my gf and boys. This is where we encounter more activity, it's beside the road and people adventure in the canyon there, drinking beers and being clumsy, ya'know. Mostly, as I've said, we just make it obvious that somebody is around.

I saw a lot of trash in the area around the road and have decided that a bit of assistance should be rendered to the family that maintains that section of the road. "This looks like a job for... your' Friendly Furry Forest Ranger!" And, of course, "8".

When I got home, for kicks, I started marking off points on my Google Earth, and was suprised to see how much area we actually patrol. Mountains, creeks, canyons and such, all in all it's probably over at least a 3 mile square area covered by what seems like too short a hike.

We do most of this patrol anywhere from 3 to 7 times a week(depending on school, of course) My gf encourages us, "Go get 8, you guys are goin' up the hill!" It's pretty cool, she's totally supportive of the whole thing. "Patrol with someone else, where?...we might be able to do that." And we're grown-ups... with kids!

That's great, man.

What do the poachers tend to go after where you are situated?

Deer, turkey, pig..... all kinds of big game. Mostly deer lately. My home was built on what later became a wildlife preserve..... hunting of any kind is not tolerated here. The only way you can kill something is if it attacks a pet, livestock or person.

Sounds like what I used to call a "Content that you went" patrol. Nothing happens, but if it did you would have been there. Don't let slow patrols discourage you, sooner or later something will happen.

I will say this though.

Since you're looking for poachers I'll tell you about the FL wildlife officer that visited us in the Police Academy back in 89.

He didn't wear Body Armor & had no need to because no Level III vest is going to stop what poachers carry. (.308 30.30 30.06) so stay WAY back & call it in. try not to be seen as they can reach out & touch someone from a great distance too.

Thanks SH. You have a valid point.... we remain either unseen or act loud and raucous to scare away game and anyone out there for illegal purpose is warned someone is there, 2 proven tactics.

One time we actually came across some dry-stored 3030 shells, so like you said, armor is kind of pointless. I hadn't thought of that point in my no armor choice.... I just prefer to be light. But now that you bring it up.......*crumples up armor checklist*

As to the clean-up... "8" and I will most likely start that next trip out. It's gonna be a big job...... all those fridges are daunting. Not to mention expensive to dispose of.

Yeah, getting fridges out of the woods? makes you wonder how they got there? Hope you have a truck. Or a guy who owns a Sikorsky Skycrane.

I always wondered Why the hell would you just dump a frig?
I mean you use them for storage if nothing else.

Just got back from patrol. It was pretty moist out since the other days rain and a little chilly but worth it. About half-way up to the rock, just after the group of fallen trees, we found what appeared to be quad tracks all the way to our destination and beyond. The tracks headed out towards a trail that heads through the mountains. From the looks it happened either between the rains or during the last one. most likely the latter... people stay inside here when it rains, mud and windchill. It gets dreary, so they don't go out much. Also the wind and rain covers up sounds pretty good too.

This is the first time in a while we've seen activity there. It was probly just a person or two, but you have to wonder why they'd take the machine back there.

It was two..... they were trying to remember where the base-camp is. They came the way I thought. Would've been nice to run into them up there. They have plans to go back and camp out that way. No big deal.

Quiet is good. That's most patrols.

Many Newbie RLSHs die from sheer boredom.

I think they expect too much. I don't expect to actually catch a crime in action, but I'm prepared too.

Maybe they figure that if they never run into crimes in progress then their services are not really needed.

Like I tell 'em....

"You think you're going to step out your front door with a mask on & 20 nazi frogmen are gonna drop out of a tree with spearguns and little swastika spear tips on their spears and attack you and it just...doesn't...work...that...way."

But nobody ever listens.
