I am still waiting for the graphic novel. Borders says that it will ship anywhere between March 1st and March 31st. (sigh)

I agree...It seems all superheros start off getting their ass kicked.(Spiderman...Batman....Robin...etc.)

Oh, wait... that wasn't me. That was the plot to Unbreakable.

You have no idea how accurate you guys are (about Kick-Ass).

BTW, I found this site through the Kick-Ass movie site. That's why I talk about it so much.

I've seen everything. I loved Mark Millar's "Wanted" (almost nothing like the movie, it's about supervillains) so I had to read Kick-Ass. Of course, when the movie trailers and clips started surfacing, I looked up everything I could.

I just got an email from Borders. My copy of the Kick-Ass graphic novel is on the way. They shipped it earlier than the estimated date. Yes!

Will have to do the same. Once again, Idea Man, good idea.

One thing about Millar's books that annoys me is that from what I've seen (and I realize that he's actually written on a hell of a lot of books, but I'm referring to his solo projects, such as Wanted, Kick-Ass, and the upcoming Nemesis,) he seems to sacrifice good storytelling for the shock factor and liberal use of cursing to cover up the fact that he's a talentless hack.

Seriously. I read Wanted and I wanted to puke. I mean, here you're got a story about a guy who's too much of a pussy to stand up to his girlfriend, even though he knows that she's been cheating on him for years in his own apartment, and he goes from that to an assassin who says "fuck" every other word and rapes pop stars, kills whomever he wants just because he can and because he feels like it, and hell, the book ends with him saying "this is me fucking you in the ass."

Millar can suck it; he's not talented, he's just a shock-jock and the studios that hire him are too afraid to reign him in because they're afraid to be seen as controlling.

Sorry for the double post, but the edit button seems to be missing for some reason.
I wanted to also say that Hit-Girl especially rubs me the wrong way, especially in this trailer.

The SHIT they have this young girl saying.

Repugnant.

All true, but White Skull.. are you going to see the movie or not? Personally, I enjoy a good crappy movie now and then. If I let my viewing habits be dictated by good taste just think of all the classic kung-fu movies I'd have missed, not to mention the Girls Gone Wild series! If we allow ourselves to discriminate between mediocre and excellent media, then we turn our backs upon the fundamental basis of the American video industry.. to make money!

And if you're against talentless hacks making money by spoon feeding the mindless masses porn and vulgarity.. well then.. that's just communist thinking. You're not a commie now, are you boy?

Broads, beer, and bombs keep America cinema great!

Remember that I can only get away with spouting this stuff because Golden Valkyrie's compouter is down. As long as she doesn't catch me, you can be sure I'll keep making brainless statements.

So is anyone who enjoys a movie that happens to have vulgarity in it one of these "mindless" people in your opinion?

Personally I find it irritating when people focus on one aspect of a film or book, and they not only let that ruin the whole experience for them, but they also judge anyone who might actually enjoy said film or book. Some people think it is funny when kids say vulgar adult things. Some people are indifferent to it, and do not care one way or another. Some people think that the vulgarity is stupid, but they are still able to enjoy the story despite its flaws.

The South Park movie is the perfect example of a movie that has a lot of vulgarity, but is also an entertaining story with a well-thought-out plot. I was impressed by that movie. And the whole moral of the story was how stupid it is for people to freak out just because of some foul language.

Seriously, people, it may seem funny, but think about this: with these movies coming out, where we've got vigilantes killing criminals, or mentally disturbed whackjobs throwing jars of bees at people, or WHATEVER comes NEXT, think: how long until something like this happens in the real world? I'm not one of those "oh, kids are so impressionable that they'll copy whatever they see on TV," people, but shit, kids ARE stupid and WILL copy whatever they see on TV, that's the sad truth.

When that happens, how long do you think it'll take before someone comes and puts a law into effect that legally destroys this community? We should be protesting these types of movies in favor of films that show how the RLSH movement ACTUALLY behaves.

I would be in favor of a campaign to make it clear to people that Kick-Ass is just a movie that should not be imitated, and that gives people good examples of what they can do in their community to make a positive difference. But I would not be in favor of protesting, boycotting, or otherwise disparaging the film. Personally, I am anticipating this movie becoming one of my all-time favorites.

Have you guys ever heard of the Saw blood drives? Every time a new Saw movie comes out, they have campaigns where they get people to donate blood. Even if you personally hate those movies, it seems to me that if they are encouraging people to donate blood then they cannot be all bad.

Why not take advantage of the potential enthusiasm that this movie will generate and try to steer it in a positive direction? No matter how hard you try, you are not going to be able to kill that enthusiasm. It is, however, possible to guide it.

PostSubject: Re: Kick-Ass: New Hit Girl Trailer and Real Life Superheroes   Sat Feb 20, 2010 3:32 pm

It wasn't so much the cursing part that bothered me, it was just the exaggeration of an 8 year old girl killing hardened criminals. There's something about that girl's character in that movie that bothers me. I can't point my finger on it exactly, maybe it's just the whole thing, or maybe it's just her ego, I don't know.

As for the whole movie of Kick-Ass itself, I think it'll be alright. I personally don't believe it'll be as good as Watchmen, but I admit I'm a bit biased there towards Watchmen. Most of the "realistic" super-hero movies have some type of exaggeration in them or some type of flaw with it. Watchmen had Dr. Manhattan, Blankman had the bulletproof/fire-proof cloth & cape, Mystery Men had some weird exaggerations of powers and abilities. Batman is realistic but it's an exaggeration - not of what is possible but of what is likely. The Punisher was also realistic, except for how his brutal style of vigilante justice was tolerated by the police and FBI. Sherlock Holmes is very realistic and possible but takes a very rare, brilliant mind and well-trained body to become like that. Unbreakable was very realistic with very little exaggerations, but unfortunately isn't considered a mainsteam superhero film, like Superman, Batman, or Spider-Man, just because he's not as gimmicky, but still represents something more realistic. But then Kick-Ass has Hit Girl. An 8 year old girl who runs around killing hardened criminals. The real question here is would such a realistic super-hero movie really suck that much and not attract much attention and interest?

Idea Man you're right about it's alright in South Park when the kids were cursing because it's funny, but in Kick-Ass it doesn't seem to be presented as a comedy film, but rather as something more "serious and realistic". And you're also right how not all movies need to make sense, like Watchmen - in fact, months ago I wrote this really long thread with several things about the movie that didn't seem right or didn't make sense, but the movie was still interesting, both despite and in spite of those things.

Hit Girl is not the first pre-adolescent female assassin, try watching the anime Noir. If anything, it has one of the greatest soundtracks in an anime EVER.

I believe that Hit-Girl is 11 or 12 in this movie, not 8. I don't know how much of a difference that makes.
