PostSubject: Batmobiles and Fantasti-cars: RLSH transport   Thu Dec 10, 2009 12:04 pm

I dreamed a dream. I dreamed of jetpacks and rocket boots, grappling hooks and pack up scooters. For one moment even roller blades floated across my dreamscape

And yet the question remained. How does a hero travel? Grappling hooks damage property, rocket boots won't be around this side of the year 3000 and pack up scooters... well. Super hero has his car, but then he doesn't wear a mask. Parkour is brilliant... but it's not exactly open-plan. I won't be leaping across rooftops any time soon.

For those of you who don't know about my super-group The Sentries, we have three members. One of them is our "mobility man;" he's outfitted with a nice and ordinary bike. And not the motorised kind. What would be excellent, ideal, absolutely perfect, would be to have some mode of transport that some run-of-the-mill baddie simply won't have lying around, and gives our team, or individual heroes, a tactical advantage.

So, heroes and compatriots of the Earth, let's share transport tips! I'll begin with an anecdote about my first transport plan, SUCTION CUPS!

I bought some. They only worked on windows, and my fellow Sentries laughed at me.

You win some, you lose some.

DEFIANCE

Defiance! GREAT ideas :-) Humor blended with practical application of modes of transport. I have my motorcycle, and I'm mostly on foot. I park my vehicle many many blocks from my patrol areas so as not to disclose my identity to authorities or anyone else wanting to take down a plate number. A bike is interesting, you could outfit it with various gear and such.

I usually move tree to tree when not walking........ but I've often toyed with the idea of a hover-platform. Maybe a Go-Ped in your' case tho', I've seen those do like 30-35 mph. Not much for inconspicuous tho', I mean unless people are used to being chased by chainsaws where you live.

"wtf" to you too, "Z" Wink

Yeah, Sentinel, that was what we were thinking. Perhaps mount a hand held spotlight to the front, attach bags, things like that. A motorcycle or a moped is also something to think about... but, as you say, number plates are a slight givaway.

The suction cup idea wasn't really all that serious, but a discovery did come out of it. Apparently huge rock-climbing suction cups have been developed. They are, however, as practical as the proverbial elephant in the china shop.

This other idea is venturing into the region of "what I would do if I were Bruce Wayne," but considering Citizen Prime's armour cost him $4000, I don't think this little vehicle is too much of a stretch:

http://www.parajet.com/shopmag/paramotors/volution/volution-micro.html

Check it out. It impressed me. I'd love to see a RLSH flying around in that! It probably will never happen, but we can dream. That's what it's all about, at the end of the day I suppose. Helping, inspiring and dreaming.

For now though, I'm gonna stick to my pimped out pushbike...

P.S.: tree to tree you say? You mean climbing? I've had a look at tree surgon climbing spikes myself (I can't think of much that I havn't looked at! And still some good old parkour seems the best option!) And are there hover platforms knocking about?

Don't have spikes yet. I wish there were hover-platforms, I saw a show when I was a kid where a guy reversed the flow on a vacuum cleaner and built a platform/shroud around it. It worked in his house. Just a pipe-dream.

Most of these ideas are unrealistic; Most people envision swinging from the rooftops.. but if you actually go out and try to act like a RLSH, you will often find it difficult to cross the street to get to the group of homeless on a bench on the other side without getting run over.

mm, clearly, but to get to good "watchpoints" sometimes it's better to be more mobile. For example, in my area you can get onto a handy network of rooftops at a critical area. Very good for posting myself there for half an hour or so and then moving on. Opening up points like these would be invaluable in keeping a lower profile and a more proficient watch. For example, simply climbing a tree can give you a helpful perspective on a park of graveyard. As experienced RLSH's are saying all the time, we're watchers and citizens, not vigilantes.

And, of course, some kind of speed is always good. Love a bit more speed.

Yeah, Entomo, maybe I'll christen my bike "The DefierMobile"! I could go all 70s-Batman. "The defiancecave," "defiancehelmet," "defiancerope."

Ooooo! Rope! something else on my "to get" list

Holy Defiance, this guy is cooperative (punching fist into gloved open hand to emphasize disdain for such defiance! LOL!! Defiance, you're ok mate !! :-) Love the bike. I've recently adopted cycle armor under my long coat. I've gone from looking like a swat guy, to well....typical hero garb, in a good way of course

I have in the past used a electric scooter similar to this one.

When I used that I was living on Florida at the time and electric scooters down there don't need to be registered so there is no plates on them and you don't need a license to ride one either down there.

Its funny you should mention a scooter.. I used to patrol at night on one of them, years ago. It was little more than a skateboard with a gas engine on the back and a pole in the front to make it easier to use the front-wheel-only brakes, but it had zip and I could fill the tank for less than a buck at the time.

It was very dangerous to ride, however..going from its top speed to a stop with only a front brake was not fun.

I was tooling around in a 1989 Monto Carlo for a while. Had an SS front end on it.

Then there was the Astro Van. LOL. What a piece of shit, but great camo for Detroit.

I think I saw a video of that guy crashing into a streetsign after riding it for ten seconds.
