The Lone Ranger wore pastel blue with a black mask and white hat. Zorro wore black but was technically an outlaw. Robin Hood wore green and brown.

It would seem that the environment does influence the color choices along with the individuals personalinty. So we have a lot of dark personalities in the community with their own reasons for being dark. They choose dark colors. And when there is a personality who wishes to put forth a positive message, they choose bright colors.

But that still doesn't quite fit. Even some who are all about the positive message are still wearing black.

careful, cuz it also tends to strike fear in the average person.I wear a bright red hoodie, and I still manage to scare the crap out of people when I go on patrols. but only when they are by themselves and its really dark.

There is little use of black in heros costumes in the comics save for the ocasional anti-hero such as Punisher or Spawn. For the most part the comic heroes use brightly colored costumes or use black sparingly as accent.

Actually you are quite right, Artisteroi.

My Iron Rat design is gray with dark blue. probably it will be not noticed enough in a dark environment?
Bright colored costumes are used by heroes to show that they're not on the evil side of life.
Remember Spiderman getting his black costume, he became darker in his behavior as well.
Your words have made me decide to change the colors of Iron Rat from gray/blue to gold/red (just like the inspiration source for it).

Thanks for bringing up this discussion,

Iron Rat

Black for me asorbs unlight very quickly and easily (Think Shamwow as the color black and a pot of water as the sunlight) so I dont wear too much of it I have the little black top and the black cowl with mask but not only doest that allow me to stand out with the crowd White actually reflects the sunlight away from me so in winter I balance it out so I am not too hot or cold in my outfits When I wear the black vest and trunks I am keeping heat in where the vital organs are For me that means keeping the extremities( Ears Nose chest head Groin hands and feet protected from frostbite in the winter However It can be also used for stealth and camoflauge if needed while Im hidding out and keeping watch out for and to catch a certain prick who is runnng around at night throwing stones at houses and breaking windows just to piss people off I hope to catch in in the act and identify him to the police as they are looking for someone but are unable to catch him because they are short on manpower

My compatriot White Barron... is just that, a guy who uses white for his gimmick!!

He actually goes with white and silver... Its the shiny-ness that pisses me off... here I work hard to be bright and colorful and he gets the most attention when we are out on patrol together... still wouldnt trade him for anybody though... I love him as a runnin-buddy!!

I recently began wearing an all black (except patches) and relatively villainous looking costume sometimes. I kind of intend it as a parody of being dark and edgy, but I'm not so sure bystanders realize that. The chest even has a subtle black on black skull design.

PostSubject: Re: The Color Black   Mon Aug 30, 2010 11:57 pm

The evolution of my costume is a little complicated. The original design was mostly brown with black accents, because it is loosely based off of SWAT and Riot gear and its easier to find that sort of stuff in black. Then I wanted to be something more vague and all-encompassing than "Bearman" because I felt like my entire personality couldn't be summed up by one animal. So I joined the forums as Daydreamer and wanted to use yellow with black accents because I had a sunnier personality and I wanted to represent the aperture of light and hope in all the darkness. Then later I basically saw a bunch of signs from the universe hinting to be Bearman like I originally panned, and then I found the yellow claws which was the final nail in the coffin. By this point I had half of my gear purchased in black and yellow so I stuck with the idea since there are black bears, and they seem to be much smarter and less violent than grizzlies.

I think the reason so many people wear black or are "anti-heroes" is because of the state of the world. Something is wrong, something is tainted, something is missing. It represents the void, if you ask me. The void in our hearts, between people, between us and nature, but maybe this is all just me. In the future, I hope to have a brown bearsuit and a polar bearsuit as well, but that is a long way off. I haven't even finished my first one.

I like your thinking Bearman. I come form West Virginia. The state animal is a black bear. I have encountered them several times where I grew up. They do seem to be a fairly intelligent (and somewhat comical) animal.

I love White Barrons outfit. It looks very similar to what I was shooting for as well. I especially like the forearm bracers. very cool
