PostSubject: sidekicks   Mon May 02, 2011 8:34 pm

something to consider. i haven't heard any on sidekicks. as this writer is completely new to the whole concept of being a uniformed hero. i still have not been out on my first patrol. i still am in the early phase of actually attempting this. my question is perhaps one that goes a little more in depth than a one-liner reply. as one who is new to this, in Texas i have yet to or still am having trouble finding anyone who actually goes out on patrol. not saying it doesn't happen but i am still new to knowing what to look for. how does one actually become a hero? i mean i'm sure all some of us or those on this site do is dress, take pics, and then claim what happened. i haven't talked to many of you. ( yet..) but to simplify this how do you rank up. when you do patrol are you alone? is it in a group? who leads? how does a follower become a leader? what does it really take to not be just a goof in a costume compared to a hero in a uniform? before i move on i do want anyone who is reading this to know i do not mean any of this offensive i'm not trying to judge or call anyone a phony. thats not my goal. i hope the questions here will help me move along towards my goal, or perhaps help someone else who doesn't know how to ask appropriate questions to get the answers they seek. if your not willing to post a reply please consider private messaging me i'm only trying to grow. as of yet i have not set any boundary's on what to ask or what not to ask.

If you can't find any RLSH/X-ALTs in your area, get some friends who're willing to work with you and go out with them. They don't have to be part of the community for you to work with them.

Also, I prefer to term "partner" over "sidekick". It just sounds more respectful.

My fiancé has asked to come along with me. So, I think she counts as my side-kick? Thankfully, she is hard as nails. If one of us is going to die, it's going to be me.

Either way, she's decided to dress in leather so I am happy. So very, very, very happy.

Citizen.

Citizen: Pretty awesome news!

Dark Wolf and I operate as a team - as equals. We do things both separately and together. Hopefully, she will eventually become more than just your sidekick. Smile

P.S. - Leather rules. Just saying.

Had many trainees in my time. If you don't want to be a "goof in a costume", then make sure you have what it takes to help people when it counts. Get training in self defense, first aid, and have a reliable method of transportation and communication at a bare minimum, if you do decide to go alone. BUT DON'T GO ALONE. Your backup doesn't have to walk the patrol route with you, but going alone is practically begging for trouble. If you have an emt(or higher), a driver, and an information gatherer (laptop), you can get a lot done, and can call for the things you need when you need them. This is a very abridged form of my operation, but will be helpful if you only want to do it for awhile and have a good chance of staying alive.

I wouldn't consider a team necessary for a handout. Depending on the surrounding circumstances, of course.

Sure, go ahead and carry 100 bottles of water and other supplies by yourself.

I carried 72 bottles of water, food and toiletries, and gift certificates to McDs on a handout. But definitely depending on the size of your handout, partnering may be necessary. Just meant that one person can do quite a lot on their own. Oh, it was actually just 48 bottles of water. 2 cases.

Nothing against working with people, but if you have a car you can keep stuff in the trunk and only pull out a backpack's worth at a time. Just saying...
