Eh... but we can already see and hear (I assume).

Leviathan brought up Magneto powers, you brought up making the Hulk with stem cells. I'm not saying transhumanism is bunk. I love transhumanism. I'm saying you're wrong about this thing that I love.

This idea is advocating an entirely new human experience. When you extend life, quality of life, the senses, and construct entirely new ones, there are fundamental changes in the structure of your brain. Let's suppose Joe Test Subject can live longer, not have diseases, not need food or sleep for extended periods, alter their focus and awareness at will, strengthen vital senses, gather information faster, and so much more. Is that person still human? Transhumanists say yes, but if their experience is outside what every other human experiences, maybe that individual is transitioning beyond humanity into post-humanity.

Transhumanists study a variety of ways to achieve radical extensions of themselves. This is to explore that paths that MIGHT lead to post-humanism. No species on Earth is standing still, we all evolve. With biotechnology, maybe we can evolve faster, and instead of doing it at random, we can choose the genetic fate of our offspring, and perhaps ourselves.

What will this mean in the short term? Every single one of us can have our genomes mapped for $100. And even before that, we'll all have $100 tablets, and so our genetic information can be carried with us, studied and decided on wherever we are. You'll know, very accurately, all of your risks to a variety of genetic disorders, and your ancestry will be conclusively tracked.

While this is going on, in the next 5 or 10 years, more and more people will become literate in biotechnology, computer programming, electrical engineering, chemical engineering. Either you will be one of them or you will not be one of them. Those that have that literacy will have greater access to hacker spaces and laboratory equipment to do their own experiments. Expect to see a rise in microbusinesses peddling new bio, nano, techno products, and many of those companies will rise to the level of Google or Facebook in rapid, enormous growth.

What does this mean for RLSH? Easy access to performance enhancement. Smaller, smarter gadgets. And most importantly, competition with criminal organizations that have just as much access to this technology as you do.

I think I get what you're saying now... I think... Trick is, never once did I ever say they were making the Incredible Hulk with stem cells. You've taken offense to something that was never stated or inferred. You're taking me saying "...with stem cells and such, such enhancements..." and running off on a wild tangent. I get it, I understand the connection that you made there, but it was never said, it was never inferred, you misread the post, so let's move past it now.

@Eon - Yes, we can, but those lines of study could lead not only to a better understanding of how the brain sends and receives signals to the rest of the body, but also ways to enhance vision and hearing in people who already have sight and hearing. I mean besides the whole new worlds it opens up for those of us who are born blind or deaf.

You know I am reasonably fit and above average intelligence. I have a couple of black belts and a college degree. All attained with ordinary human powers.

This morning I was talking with a homeless man who didn't finish school and as far as I know can't even read. I was wondering if I could help him to improve. That is really where this discussion needs to go. I would bet most of us are doing okay but there are plenty of people out there who are mentally unstable or illiterate or just plain homeless. How do we help those people recognize their potential?

How far would you go?

Me Id go all the way to Farpoint station

In reality though it depends on the situation

Without going into becoming the offspring of Megneto and Hulk after their wedding and Honeymoon night I would go the distance to get kids off of drugs ciggerets and alcohol I would do whatever it takes to get the bully away from the kid he is picking on and get the kid to saftey then turn to help the bully

I would go however far it takes me to stop someone from committing suicide

Whatever it takes Im not letting some child freeze out side durring a storm at night Ill get him inside and try to call his family to let them know that he is safe

Ill go anyplace I can to find the child who is missing and make sure that he is found and returned to his family

Ill go as far as I can to warm up the thin coated dog that is freezing outside and give him water and food

I already have, lol. At the School it was necesary; I had to completely abandon all notions of trying to control my reality in order to survive, and I honed my mind, body, and spirit, and I continue to do so. It's kind of a PTSD thing cuz I do it compulsively because I never want to be a victim again. I surround myself with good friends and they let me know if I'm taking it too far, lol; though I can usually tell when that point is. Know your limits, and work to safely break them.

I would do anything to benefit myself, whether it is fantasy or reality. I believe im doing well, im finishing up college and I read just about anything to increase my knowledge. Im semi materialistic but only with my car and my computer, both of which are fast. I go out of my way to help people who need it and I guess im proud of who i am. When the opportunity comes, I will take it even farther.
