Wrestling is a good style. Also boxing. Both are useful in subduing an oppent and restraing unruly aggressors. I would stay away from flashy and impractical styles.I dont think a spinning cresent kick will do much good against a career criminal.

I would like to experiment with combining the fluidity and focus of Tai chi movements with the dynamics and real time flexibility of Jeet Kun Do.

At the moment however, I refer to and use the older military combatives, down and dirty and to the point.

Depends on the person and their body.

Well in my personal opinion, I definitely think that any grappling art would be extremely useful in being an RLSH. Most cops apply grappling-based skills to the job and I think we should as well. Simple take-down and immobilization procedures allow for maximum effectiveness without causing harm to the offender. And lack of injury to the offender will definitely help your case, if the cops decide to take you in for questioning or debriefing.

I do not like to fight wrestlers.

They are technique-thinkers and very good at
nerve-spots

I don't like fighting Krav Maga people either.
whew!

Tai Chi is all defense and ruthless - very very good stuff
( PS. "Tai" means "very")

The stuff that police officers use HAS to work, very very good stuff
but they can hurt people if they need to

How have aikido worked for you? It seem to have a slow learning curve, so it might take a few years to become a decent beginner in the art. Another disadvantage is the kata style of training. There is difficult to know how it it actually will work when you get resistance and the opponent don't use ukemi. I unfortunately used it once, and kinda lost control over the amount of power in the technice. I'll imagine a hard style would give more control over the force used in a fight, so you don't have to hurt people more than needed to take them down.

I've been thinking of looking into Aikido myself. I like the idea of redirecting the opponent's energy, plus I'm a short, skinny dude so I don't think a brute force techniques would be the best for me to try (though I do have a green belt Shorin-Ryu Karate from my university days- but I havent practiced that in about 10 years).

I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts on it for sure.

Once you know some, you can't take it back out of your head.

You BECOME a martial artist.

Aikido is subtle but truly aces.

My best input would be to study as much and as many as possible
but Aikido still comes out on top

In My Humble Opinion

I have stated this many times before. When it comes to martial arts,it doesn't matter the style,it's the martial artist himself that determines the effectiveness. A master in one style can take a novice of another style. I know a bit of 4 different styles but if i face someone who is a master of one style,they probably hand me my butt. it's a matter of mastery not syle or form itself.

Some styles is easier to master than others. Aikido is one of the others. If you want to learn to fight/self defense fast, it's a good idea to learn something more agressive.

@Un-named_Hero
If you want to learn aikido you should start today. And in about five years you will a decent beginner. Being short can be a disadvantage in aikido because reach matters alot. It can be compensated with speed, reaction and technice (like anything else). Using the oppornents energy is a very good idea, but it takes alot of reaction and speed (and sometimes luck) to harmonize with an attackers energy. You won't be able to learn how most of the technices actually work in a dojo, for doing that will most likely give injuries (got surpised myself how those graceful gentle caresses became clumsy destruction).

@Blue Phenix
I agree on that it's more about the fighter than the style, but some styles develop alot of poor fighters. If you're gonna fight, learn to fight. Aikido is more of an art. The fact that you can use it in a fight is just a bonus.

BTW, I'll put in my usual thumbs up for kali & JKD. Specifically the Inosanto blend. Effective and easy to learn.

Kali has a lot to offer as does JKD. The flow drills in Soyoc Kali have been very beneficial to me.

The conclusion on this topic could be something like this:

"If you start training when you are ten or younger anything will work. If you are gonna start training now, go for something easy-to-learn and reality-oriented."

Just a suggestion Very Happy

btw, my father-in-law is doing some skeet shooting, that's some awesome martial art. I'm sure he can beat anybodys kung-foo with that shotgun.
